The Dependent

Seeking Safety Through Connection

Meet the Dependent

This dragon is always looking for someone to lean on.

They search for people who feel safe, strong, capable, knowledgeable, or certain.

They look for guidance.

They seek reassurance.

They feel most secure when they know someone else is there to help carry the weight.

At first glance, the Dependent can look loving, loyal, connected, and devoted.

And often, they are.

But beneath the surface, they carry a question that follows them everywhere:

“What if I can’t do this on my own?”

Because underneath that question is an even deeper one:

“Can I trust myself?”

Why This Dragon Exists

The Dependent didn’t appear by accident.

They were created as a survival strategy.

Somewhere along the way, you may have learned that safety, support, guidance, or stability came from someone outside of you.

Maybe your confidence was questioned.

Maybe your choices were criticized.

Maybe someone else always seemed to know better.

Maybe you learned that relying on others felt safer than relying on yourself.

So your nervous system adapted.

The Dependent stepped forward and said:

“I’ll find someone who knows.”

“I’ll make sure we’re not alone.”

“I’ll help us stay connected.”

And for a while, that strategy worked.

They helped you feel supported.

They helped you feel safe.

They helped you navigate uncertainty.

They were never the problem.

They were the protection.

How the Dependent Shows Up

The Dependent often appears as:

Seeking reassurance before making decisions

Feeling anxious when facing challenges alone

Looking to others for answers you already know

Struggling to trust your own judgment

Feeling lost without guidance or support

Fear of being abandoned or left on your own

Second-guessing yourself after making decisions

Avoiding responsibility for fear of getting it wrong

Staying in relationships that no longer serve you because they feel familiar

Believing someone else is stronger, wiser, or more capable than you

They are constantly scanning for someone who can provide certainty.

A supportive person can feel like safety.

A strong connection can feel like security.

Being alone can feel frightening because there is no one there to reassure them.

Without external support, they often feel unsure of themselves.

The Cost of Letting the Dragon Lead

The Dependent’s intentions are good.

The problem is that they can become so reliant on external support that they lose touch with their own inner strength.

When other people become your primary source of safety, your relationship with yourself begins to weaken.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Fear of being alone
  • Weak boundaries
  • People-pleasing
  • Loss of confidence
  • Chronic self-doubt
  • Over-reliance on relationships
  • Anxiety when support isn’t available

When everyone else becomes responsible for your sense of security, it becomes difficult to recognize the strength that already exists within you.

You begin looking outward for safety that can only be created within.

Befriending the Dependent

Healing isn’t about slaying the dragon.

It’s about understanding why they showed up to protect you in the first place.

The Dependent has been working very hard for a very long time.

They genuinely believe that safety comes from someone else.

Instead of fighting them, try getting curious.

Take a Moment to Reflect…

  • What am I hoping someone else’s support will give me?
  • What feels unsafe about trusting myself?
  • When did I learn that someone else knew better than I did?
  • What am I afraid might happen if I make the wrong choice?
  • Where do I seek reassurance instead of trusting my own judgment?
  • What would help me feel safe standing on my own feet?

Compassion often reveals what fear never could.

What Is This Dragon Protecting?

Beneath the Dependent is often a deep longing to feel safe, supported, secure, and capable.

They are searching for certainty.

They want someone to help carry the weight.

They want reassurance that everything will be okay.

They want proof that they can rely on someone when life feels overwhelming.

The problem is that they keep looking for safety in places that can never fully provide it.

No relationship can permanently eliminate uncertainty.

No amount of reassurance can permanently erase self-doubt.

No one else can create the self-trust that must be built from within.

The Dependent spends so much time searching for security in other people that they sometimes forget to recognize the strength that already exists inside them.

Reclaiming the Treasure

Jewel Reclaimed 💎: Self-Trust

Every dragon protects something.

The Dependent protects your inner security.

The treasure was never another person’s certainty.

The treasure is learning that you can trust yourself.

You can make decisions.

You can navigate challenges.

You can survive uncertainty.

You can ask for support without surrendering your power.

You do not need someone else to carry you in order to move forward.

You do not need constant reassurance to know you are capable.

You do not need another person to tell you what is right for you.

The Dependent helped you survive.

Now they can learn a new job.

Instead of constantly searching for someone to lean on, they can begin helping you build trust in your own strength.

Because the treasure they have been guarding all along is your ability to trust yourself.

The dragon is not the problem.

The dragon is the protection.

And beneath the protection is the treasure.

Reflection Questions

Where in my life do I struggle to trust myself?

What decisions do I frequently seek reassurance about?

What am I afraid might happen if I rely on my own judgment?

When did I learn that someone
else knew better than I did?

What does support mean to me, and
when does support become dependence?

✨If I fully trusted myself, what choice would I make right now?

A Note From the Wisdom Keeper

You were never meant to carry everything alone.

The Dependent learned that connection felt safer than uncertainty. They learned to look for guidance, reassurance, and support because somewhere along the way, trusting yourself stopped feeling safe.

So they searched for people to lean on.

People to follow.

People to reassure them that everything would be okay.

And sometimes those people helped.

But the strength you see in others is not something you are missing.

It is something you are recognizing.

The wisdom you seek outside yourself is often a reflection of wisdom that already exists within you.

The courage you admire in others is courage that lives within you, too.

You do not have to choose between connection and self-trust.

You do not have to prove that you can do everything alone.

You are allowed to ask for support.

You are allowed to receive help.

The difference is that support becomes a gift rather than a requirement when you trust yourself to stand on your own feet.

The moment you stop looking for someone else to carry you is the moment you begin remembering that you were always capable of carrying yourself.

With love,

The Wisdom Keeper 🐉💜

You Are the
Treasure.

The dragons helped you survive.
