The Numb-er
Disconnecting to Protect Yourself From Pain

Meet the Numb-er

This dragon knows how to turn the volume down.
They disconnect when feelings become overwhelming. They distract themselves when emotions become uncomfortable. They find ways to stay busy, entertained, productive, or checked out so they don’t have to feel what hurts.
They shut down.
They tune out.
They go numb.
They look for ways to escape difficult emotions because feeling nothing often feels safer than feeling too much.
At first glance, the Numb-er can look calm, easygoing, unbothered, or emotionally detached.
And often, they are.
But beneath the surface, they carry a question that follows them everywhere:
“How do I make this stop?”
Because underneath that question is an even deeper one:
“What happens if I actually feel this?”
Why This Dragon Exists
The Numb-er didn’t appear by accident.
They were created as a survival strategy.
Somewhere along the way, you may have learned that certain emotions felt overwhelming, unsafe, painful, or impossible to process.
Maybe your feelings were dismissed.
Maybe you were told to toughen up.
Maybe nobody taught you how to work through difficult emotions.
Maybe feeling everything became too exhausting.
Maybe checking out felt safer than staying present.
So your nervous system adapted.
The Numb-er stepped forward and said:
“I’ll turn the volume down.”
“I’ll help us get through this.”
“We don’t have to feel all of it right now.”
And for a while, that strategy worked.
They helped you survive painful experiences.
They helped you function during difficult times.
They helped you avoid emotional overwhelm.
They helped you keep moving forward.
They were never the problem.
They were the protection.
How the Numb-er Shows Up
The Numb-er often appears as:
- Feeling disconnected from your emotions
- Distracting yourself when difficult feelings arise
- Staying busy to avoid slowing down
- Emotional shutdown during stress
- Difficulty identifying what you’re feeling
- Escaping into work, food, entertainment, scrolling, substances, or other distractions
- Feeling detached from yourself or others
- Avoiding situations that bring up strong emotions
- Saying “I’m fine” when you’re not
- Struggling to stay present with uncomfortable feelings
They are constantly scanning their environment for ways to reduce emotional discomfort.
Distraction can feel like relief.
Numbing can feel like peace.
Avoiding feelings can feel safer than facing them.
Without something to distract them, they often feel uncertain about what might rise to the surface.
The Cost of Letting the Dragon Lead
The Numb-er’s intentions are good.
The problem is that they can become so focused on protecting you from difficult emotions that they also block the feelings that make life meaningful.
When numbing becomes the primary way you stay safe, life can begin to feel flat, disconnected, or distant.
Over time, this can lead to:
- Emotional disconnection
- Feeling stuck or empty
- Difficulty identifying emotions
- Disconnection from yourself
- Disconnection from others
- Avoidance of difficult conversations
- Feeling detached from life
- Difficulty experiencing joy, excitement, or fulfillment
When shutting down becomes easier than feeling, it becomes difficult to fully experience your own life.
You begin avoiding not only pain, but the emotions that make connection possible.
Befriending the Numb-er
Healing isn’t about slaying the dragon.
It’s about understanding why they showed up to protect you in the first place.
The Numb-er has been working very hard for a very long time.
They genuinely believe that turning the volume down is the safest option.
Instead of fighting them, try getting curious.
Take a Moment to Reflect…
- What feeling am I trying not to feel right now?
- What am I distracting myself from?
- When did I learn that certain emotions weren’t safe?
- What feels uncomfortable about slowing down?
- What might happen if I allowed myself to feel this?
- What would help me stay present with this feeling?
Compassion often reveals what criticism never could.
What Is This Dragon Protecting?
Beneath the Numb-er is often a deep longing to feel alive, connected, understood, and safe.
They want peace.
They want relief.
They want freedom from emotional overwhelm.
The problem is that they often try to create that safety by disconnecting from their feelings altogether.
But numbness cannot create healing.
Disconnection cannot create wholeness.
The Numb-er spends so much energy turning down difficult emotions that they sometimes miss the experiences that make life worth feeling.

A Note From the Wisdom Keeper
You learned how to turn the volume down.
The Numb-er stepped forward when certain feelings became too big, too painful, too overwhelming, or too confusing to carry all at once. They learned how to help you keep going when stopping to feel wasn’t an option.
So they became protective.
Reliable.
Quiet.
They learned how to help you function.
They learned how to help you survive difficult moments.
They learned how to help you keep moving forward.
And those gifts are real.
But somewhere along the way, protection became disconnection.
Relief became avoidance.
And surviving became a way of life.
You were never meant to feel nothing.
You were never meant to disconnect from yourself in order to stay safe.
You were never meant to lose access to your joy in order to avoid your pain.
The truth is, emotions are not the enemy.
They are messengers.
They are information.
They are part of being human.
You do not have to feel everything all at once.
You do not have to force yourself into emotional overwhelm.
You simply have permission to listen to what your feelings have been trying to tell you.
Little by little.
Moment by moment.
Feeling by feeling.
The life you’ve been searching for was never hidden behind another distraction.
It was waiting underneath the things you’ve been trying not to feel.
With love,
The Wisdom Keeper 🐉💜

CONNECT THE DOTS
If this dragon feels familiar, it rarely travels alone.
The Numb-er is part of a larger survival pattern — one where safety becomes tied to staying busy, staying distracted, and staying disconnected from what hurts.
You might also recognize these patterns nearby:

The Avoider
“Maybe if I disappear, it will go away.”
Looks for safety through distance, distraction, withdrawal, and avoidance of discomfort.
Connection: Where the Numb-er seeks safety by disconnecting from difficult feelings, the Avoider seeks safety by creating distance from difficult situations.

The Protector
“If I stay ready, I stay safe.”
Looks for safety through vigilance, preparation, caution, and protection from potential threats.
Connection: Where the Numb-er turns away from their own emotions, the Protector turns toward everyone else’s needs.

The Performer
“Love me for what I do.”
Looks for worth through achievement, accomplishment, recognition, and being needed.
Connection: Where the Numb-er seeks safety through disconnection, the Performer seeks safety through staying busy, productive, and focused on achievement.
The Pattern Behind It All
These dragons rarely travel alone.
What looks like one survival strategy is often connected to several others, each trying to solve the same problem in a different way.
One dragon may disconnect from difficult feelings. Another may create distance when emotions feel overwhelming. Another may focus on everyone else’s needs. Another may stay busy, productive, and constantly moving.
Beneath each strategy is the same desire:
To feel safe. To belong. To be loved.
If one dragon feels familiar, there’s a good chance others are flying nearby.
